How to launch a campaign with promotions and discounts

An ecommerce site is not complete without campaigns which offer customers certain promotions or discounts. In this article we’ll see how to set them up.

Prestashop allows you to create discounts in the cart or in the catalog for specific products, users or product categories, from your management panel.

The 2 options are Cart Rules and Catalog Price Rules:

Cart Rules

  1. Go to Catalog (1) > Discounts > Cart rules (2).
  2. Click “Add new cart rule” (3).
  3. To configure the rule, you must complete the following fields in each tab:

Informations Tab (1)

  • Name (2): This is the name of the coupon to be displayed in the purchase summary and invoice. This is a compulsory field. You must fill in the different languages you have in your store (3).
  • Description (4): This is internal data and will not be visible to the client.
  • Code (5): Code required to apply the discount. You can generate one by clicking on Generate (6), or you can leave it empty, so the coupon will always apply.
  • Highlight (7): If activated, it displays the coupon as available in the purchase summary.
  • Partial use (8): If activated and the customer purchase amount is less than the coupon discount, Prestashop will generate a new discount coupon for the remaining value.
  • Priority (9): This is the degree of priority that this coupon has with regard to the rest of the applicable coupons.
  • Status (10): Active or Inactive.

To save the changes, click “Save and Stay” before moving on to the next tab (11).

Condition Tab (1)

  • Limiting to a single client (2): If a client’s name is entered, the coupon is limited to this user only. If left blank, it will be available to all customers.
  • Validity (3): Validity period of the coupon. To fill these fields in more easily, you can use the buttons numbered 4 and 5.
  • Minimum Amount (6): This option allows us to define the minimum amount so that the voucher can be applied, as well as to select the currency (7), if it includes fees (8) and whether or not it includes transportation (9).
  • Total available (10): Total vouchers available.
  • Total available for each user (11): Number of times each user can use the coupon.
  • Restrictions:
    • Country selection: The delivery countries to which they apply are selected.
    • Carrier selection: The carriers to which they apply are selected.
    • Selecting Client Groups: Indicates the client groups to which they apply.
    • Product selection (12): Add a rule to a specific group by filling in the following points:
      • The cart must contain at least X products that match the following rules: For this rule to apply, the cart must have at least X products, otherwise it won’t be applicable.
      • Add a rule regarding: In this section we’ll select the contents of the catalogue to which we want to apply the rule.

Actions Tab (1)

  • Free Shipping (2): Active or Inactive.
  • Apply Discount (3):
    • Percentage (%): Indicates the discount percentage, not applicable to the shipping cost.
    • Amount: Indicate the amount to be discounted, as well as the currency and whether taxes are included or not.
    • None: Do not apply any discount to the product price.
  • Exclude discounted products (4): If it is activated, the discount code will not be applied to
  • Send a gift (5): If this is active, you must select the product to be gifted, and it will be added to the basket at no cost.

 

Catalog Price Rules

  1. Go to Catalog (1) > Discounts > Catalog Price Rules (2)
  2. Click “Add new catalog price rule” (3)
  3. To configure this rule you must complete the following fields:

Information Tab

  • Name (1): The name of the discount rule that will be applied to a particular product.
  • Currency (2): Currency to which the rule will apply.
  • Country (3): The rule will apply to customers in the selected country.
  • Group (4): The rule applies to customers belonging to a specific group of customers.
  • From quantity (5): The rule will apply only if the order has at least a certain quantity of products.
  • Price (tax excl.) (6): The new price for the product. You can change the price of the products that match the rules you are setting. By default, the rule will be applied to the base price.
  • Leave initial price: On or Off.
  • From (8) To (9): The rule will apply in this time frame.
  • Reduction type (10): The discount can be a certain amount of money or a percentage of the total order quantity.
  • Reduction with our without taxes (11):  The discount may either include taxes or leave them out.
  • Reduction (12): The value of the discount. Depending on the Reduction type set, if you enter “10.0” in this field it can be understood as “10 € discount” or “10% discount”.
